Documents Required to Obtain Brazilian Citizenship
Foreigners can become Brazilian nationals through naturalization, which requires living legally in the country for at least four years with permanent residency — a period reduced to just one year for those married to a Brazilian citizen or who have a Brazilian-born child. Applicants must demonstrate basic Portuguese proficiency, have no criminal record, and submit a formal request to the Ministry of Justice. Once approved, citizenship is granted through an oath of allegiance before a federal judge.
